Eating out can be fun. You get to select from an array of eateries where you want to go according to what you feel like eating. On entering, your presence is graciously acknowledged by those at the restaurants reception. You can ask for a glass of water or a napkin or two; they stand by waiting for your request. After having your meal, you gather your items, put aside a tip and ride home. Your journey is about to conclude. One persons journey, however, is only just commencing. Someone has to be at the ready to clean up after you to make it pleasant for the forthcoming customer. The person in charge of this is the busboy.
On average, in restaurants, diners and other eateries, irrespective of their size, it is mandatory to have staff equipped to clear the tables after someone has been there, prepare the table for the next customer, and be of assistance to the wait staff if necessary.
ÒBussingÓ is a common job in USA. Busboys occasionally serve customers refreshments even when they have not made an order. They will serve food if duty calls for it.
Bustiers usually are not paid very well. They are heavily reliant on tips as their hourly or weekly month is very poor.
Many who are employed in smaller, less renowned restaurants carry bus boxes with crockery and utensils piled one on top of the other to carry back to the washer with considerable ease. In high street restaurants, they carry every dish individually. Time is required for this as the busboy has to be careful and meticulous in carrying each plate.
A number of celebrities have worked as busboys when they were young to make money.
In his youth, Al Pacino worked as one.
Alec Baldwin, one of the renowned Baldwin brothers (all of whom are involved in the media), was a busboy at New YorkÕs Studio 54 in his youth.
President of Vietnam Mr. Ho hin Mingh himself ÒbussedÓ in an eatery in Boston in Parker House Hotel.
Jon Stewart was a ÒbusserÓ at a Mexican eatery.
Johnny Depp too was one at a point. Johnny Depp was also a busboy.
When you are eating out next, remember that the cleanliness of your table and the area as a whole is the result of hours of work put in by busboys employed there. They make their living off tips so a generous amount left by you will be of great use to them. Besides, there is always a chance that if they become famous someday, they will recall your kindness.
